Professional Statement

Carla A. Fazio holds a MA in Dance Education from New York University, New York, New York, USA, and a BA in Dance Performance from Rhode Island College, Providence, Rhode Island, USA. Currently, she is involved on projects with the Dublin Youth Dance Company working with Mariam Ribón, including, teaching dance at St. Mary’s National School in Sandyford, Co. Dublin and Notre Dame Secondary School in Dundrum, Co. Dublin. She also teaches contemporary dance and choreographs for the Junior Company of the Dublin Youth Dance Company. Prior to moving to Dublin, she taught various forms of dance in the the New York City Public School system, most recently as the full-time dance educator at the Urban Assembly Bronx Academy of Letters. At Letters, she taught students aged 11-18 and produced four dance concerts per school year. She established the dance programme at the school and sat on many in-school committees. She has performed at numerous venues in New York City and around the New England area. Her work has been viewed at the 92nd Street Y, Frederick Loewe Theatre, The Apollo, and the Sanford Meisner Theatre. While in undergraduate and graduate school, she had the opportunity to work with many well known choreographers including Deborah Damast, JoAnna Mendl Shaw, Claire Porter, and Clay Taliaferro. Outside of the academic setting, she has performed with Deborah Damast and Dancers, Sarah Moore, and Julie Klein. In addition to teaching, choreographing, and performing, Carla has been a conference presenter numerous times at the (USA) National Dance Education Organization’s annual conference and has been a part of the New York City Department of Education pilot program looking at best practices for the assessment of dance in education, known as Arts Achieve. She has led various workshops in combining dance with core academic curriculum and has chaired the dance teacher chapter of United Federation of Teachers in New York City. She is excited to bring her knowledge of and passion for dance and dance education to Ireland.
