Professional Statement

I lecture in MIC, University of Limerick where I teach under and postgraduate students on the Bachelor of Education programmes. In my professional capacity as an educator and artist I am interested in the artistic process and engagements between children and young people, artists, society and cultural institutions, in a formal and informal context. My own practice foci are in exploring participatory art projects, and working in sculptural and drawing disciplines. My current research focus is in exploring the Anthropocene concept and the challenges we face in our responses to the natural world. How can we equip children with the skills to think and explore like artists and designers, to be curious, imaginative and innovative? What do we need to do as artists and educators if we are to stand a greater chance of “people leaving schools and universities having discovered their real creative abilities” (Robinson, 2011) and meeting the challenges of living in an Anthropocene era.
