Rathcabbin days...

This week in Rathcabbin was another interesting day... Tom ( the teacher ) was away last week so we got to work bringing him up to speed on the project to date. The children and I showed him a slide show of the object photographs. Knowing the children as well as he does he was able to contribute greatly to the discussion and add a personal touch. We then had phase two of the objects brought to the circle. Today we added... an old rusty pair of sheep sheers ( found in a barn ), a season pod brought from Africa by one girls great grandfather, A beautifully crumbling old book from 1841 and a gold wedding ring which had been passed down through the maternal blood line for the last two centuries. After another photography session in which the second group documented their findings we spent some time talking about the postcard. This idea caught on like wild fire and they spent much time over the period of the day (in smaller groups) making beautiful little drawings on the postcard which gave clues to what they had been doing.
Later we had a drawing session out in the yard ( drawing trees expressively } We spent a lot of time talking about different drawing styles and how everyone has a different way of drawing.
The later afternoon was spent planning an excursion to Portumna castle with Trionas group from across the border.. there are exciting links to both our projects there.. mapping and family portraits. We are planning to make a group activity using string, cardboard and parcel labels! Tom Kennedy is organizing the bus for next week, we hope for fresh bright days like these ones.
The group were introduced to the online journal and I decided to send them up one by one to write a line or two, this worked very well and we all couldn`t believe how the final piece flowed together so well. They responded well to the idea of the journal and to seeing other peoples projects online.
Another strand to this is myself and Triona`s gradually building relationship with the lady in the post office in Portumna.. seeing the postcard come and go we now realize that SHE is completely part of it. We plan to make a portrait of her too.
We spent an hour debriefing in The Shannon Oaks, good to catch up with Triona and throw some ideas back and forth.
