Slide show/drawings/animations

The second session of contact with Rathcabbin this term got of to a cracking start... after chatting with my mentor Ann, I realized that I would be able to introduce a photography project using disposable cameras. The answer to my dilemma of how to approach this was actually quite simple. Six camera were all that were needed.. one camera to each group of three to four children. I then marked them with sticky labels and they had fun inventing names for their teams.

The idea is for them to head off and make 7-9 images of their lives and families now.

After our brain storming session the week before, it really came up that they would like to bring in new objects or as I am calling them `objects from now`. As the last session was about family histories. I have now decided (with them) that this term will be about OUR LIVES AND FAMILIES NOW. I am excited about having found a way to connect up with all the hard work we have done last time and still start something quite new and fresh.

They were so focussed and engaged with the project this week.. Mr Kennedy, our teacher remarked on it.

I also brought in my slide projector and nineteen clear sides ( with acetate) I asked them to go in to their own private inner world and draw something which represented their lives now. The drawings were quite extraordinary this week. They were completely silent while doing their drawing ( which is very unusual! ) They then tansferred their designs to the very minimal surface of the slide. The miniature nature of the slide as a medium seems to make them highly concentrated... lunch time was upon us. So we set up the slide projector and created an animated show. The images were of such subjects as orphan kittens, tractors, cars, rifles, bedrooms, houses, gardens, bottle fed lambs... everything told a story about their lives which I found fascinating.

In the final session we took out big white sheets of card and begun to create the story board for the shadow puppet show that we are working towards, they work in their own groups again for this and again using the information from the historical and the present work.
They work on the online journal which can be seen on the kidsown journal blog, it`s worth a look to see how they find the days themselves.

They are also bringing in significant objects from now.. we will probably make another video piece to echo what we achieved last term but running into life now. It`s all go!!
