The day was as joyous as the weather ;sunny and warm and full of promise!
The first week at Coolbock National has been a seriously rewarding and intense experience. We kicked off with some origami; folding and shaping our paper to first form a catamaran boat, then changing it`s shape into a windmill with a simple magical twist. The group of nineteen children and their teacher Martin Enright (Principal) set about the task with such concentration and determination. I wanted to create an atmosphere which would help instill a sense of confidence and accomplishment for each children attempting not to hurry the process but allow for moments of reflection and to observe the changing forms at every stage . We arrived with a feeling of calm & satisfaction as we viewed our creations.
Later we formed into groups of varying ages to work with tissue paper. By making intricate folds , each child created a petal segment which was then assembled to reveal a beautiful star which glowed as we hung them on the classroom windows. This was a process of great dexterity for all ,young and not so old ; each group kept on truckin` and I hope felt rewarded by their efforts.
I was surprised by the amount of requests from teachers and children alike; to take home more coloured paper to make forms of their own and develop their skills. We also cut sticks to attach to our windmills which we will launch next week. Blow the wind blow.
So our Fab Days have begun!
Oh the happiness to observe nature, reflect upon her magical presence and beauty, to be accepting of her wisdom & gentle guidance!
Next day I set up shop in the mobile unit next to the school play ground; I spent a peaceful day unpacking and preparing my time schedule. I started to make connections with natural forms and my own constructions, worked on some small collage and every so often was visited by the children from junior infants who were curious to know what I was about. The day was as joyous as the weather sunny, warm and full of promise!
