"Having the opportunity to be mentored by Marie Brett on the Heron Project is a complete privilege. To be able to witness the non-directive way that she and Gana encourage the children to think about the work, and how she guides each of the groups, so they are each part of the decision making for the pieces they are working on is very useful.

It is great that the children are working from their own observations, taken while on a walk along the Bandon river on the first day after reading the poem ’The Heron’. How each child was invited to choose their favourite part of the poem, so making a personal connection with it.

I also am impressed by the way the children are encouraged to use their notebooks that they used to draw their initial observations to reflect on the sessions. This keeps them engaged with the process and their own contribution. It is also valuable for us to look at these reflections and gauge the benefits of this project to them."
