Day 1 - Looking at the Area

Day one at School Naisiunta Bhride was very energetic and really enjoyable. We began the day with some games to get to know each other.

Following this, I showed the children a images of previous work - both my own and work I had done with other children/young people. The children were so enthusiastic and vocal: sharing their opinions on what they saw and how it was made, asking questions and suggesting theories about the work that were both close to the core and reflective of my own thoughts.

We then began making maps: of either the area where we lived, an area special to us, or in some cases, an invented place. The maps ranged in materials from pencil and ruler to almost 3-dimensional tangles of overgrowth!

We chatted about the maps, giving more information about the places that were depicted. So how would we personalize these maps? We took the opportunity to render portraits of each other using acetate and markers. The results were both shocking and hilarious! Combined with some writing about our maps on the same sheet of acetate, we layered the two images.
