Day 6 - teacher + artist

Charlotte and I had an informal chat over lunch and then a long meeting after school. Charlotte raised concerns of time, that she felt she didn`t have time to work through the curriculum with one whole day dedicated to art. We discussed the possibilities of how the residency day could tie in with the areas of the curriculum she felt were missing and I hope have started a very constructive exchange.

Charlotte returned to her need for a seasonal one-off day of making, eg. decorations for the school. This is very difficult for me, but I worked through it with her and compromised a little to go ahead with her idea but to work with the shapes and the installation in a way that would be more challanging and exciting for me and hopefully herself and the children. Some of the ideas we discussed harked back to the weather panes of last week, and i am envisaging multiples of white shapes suspended from the ceiling....we`ll see.

Another issue was raised through our conversation. I was hoping to plan the open day with Charlotte and the children. But it became clear that Charlotte felt uncomfortable with inviting the parents in. We got into a conversation about quality of produce and journey of process. While Charlotte understood the process was important at this stage, she felt that the parents wouldn`t understand and would be disappointed at the outcome. I imagine that this is a common conversation. We agreed, so far, that the open day would instead be a day that was like a `wild card` for us in terms of making and that I would create a short dvd of the process and think about displaying some of the work so that the children can choose to show their parents when they are in for carol singing on the last day of school. We will think about an `open day`, in the traditional sense, in January.
