Day 12 - Printed Portaits

We worked in small groups for this session, sharing two computers and two printers. I demonstrated to the first group of children how to isolate the objects they had photographed from their background using PhotoShop. I also demonstrated how to scale and position the objects in a preview before printing out. Finally, we walked through the process of off-setting the printed imagery onto etching paper.

Each small group worked on their own prints and then showed the process to the next group and so on. Once the objects and figures had been isolated, they could be printed one by one. This allowed each child to print both their figure and the objects at varying sizes and to offset print them in particular locations. We used small sheets of Fabriano etching paper to offset the imagery. Each child created an individual portrait in this way.

A few children, looking at these images, asked if we would work on them further, perhaps over-printing again to build up backgrounds. We will need to involve stencils for this. We will have a group discussion about it to see how everyone wants to proceed.

I`m really enjoying the process of printmaking and the children are excited by it too, although the printers sometimes complain!
