Day 3 - Talks and Workshop

Three more talks to schools that had work on display in the Gallery. The talks went really well, being scheduled to last 20 minutes but often lasting 40! The teachers seemed enthusiastic and inquisitive as to the making of some of the work presented. The children had many questions, ideas and suggestions in response to the work. For me, it was a wonderful opportunity to share a significant body of work with an entirely new audience and to get such positive feedback. It was also, i realized, the first time that the work I had made with the children while in residence at The Ark, had been shared. Of course, the work in-progress at Cairns NS hadn`t yet been shared outside of Practice.ie blogs. What made it even more interesting, was sharing it with an audience of children - given that most of the work shown was made in collaboration with children. The afternoon workshop was with seven 6-9yr olds. We explored drawing maps of where we lived and overlaying these maps with portraits of ourselves and including, on the inside of the head and shoulder silhouettes, all the things that are important to us in life. This idea of layering an image came from my work-in-progress at Cairns NS. In a way, it was an opportunity to explore this process with a fresh group and see how it would work. The children made really beautiful map drawings, but didn`t much like the idea of working over them. The result was a set of really strong drawings that are semi-map/semi-portrait or all map with portrait hidden beneath! I had taken photographs of each map-drawing before it was worked on. I`ll be taking all the images back to the children at Cairns NS for discussion, I think they will directly feed into our work.
