Day 1 on the 22/04/09

Wednesday the 22/04/09 was my first day on the project. I worked with 4 children in the morning and they created a story together. They where ages 5, 6, 9 and 9. They worked very well together. First they made a little lip sync puppet each, while they made they discused what story they where making, what kind of character they where making for example a boy age 9 wanted his character to be the villan so he decided to use dark materials and give him  a cape. I found at the begining it was hard to get them to create a story but they where very definate about their characters and the fabrics they used. Later during play however a story was formed. So this week I have decided while they are making to let them just talk about what ever they like and to not push them to make a story and let it naturally progress as it did in the end last week.

After they had made the puppets, a six year old girl had to leave . So the remaining three drew on the backdrop I asked them to start to draw the story that they had come up with ,the places the characters would pass through. They decided to draw was a location for each of there characters to live and as the backdroped moved behind them they played with their puppets and the backdrop how ever they wanted and I let the video camera run. What came out of it was very natural play, and a very long chase through the pink house, the volcano and the hospital castle. Elements of the previous story came out but mostly they just made it up as they went.

We did a live link up with one of the other hospitals and the children from both hospitals got to show each other their puppets and say hello. It was great but hopefully this week we will be able to perform for each other on the live link up.

In the afternoon I worked with a girl age 3 she wanted to create a story about a talking mouse. She drew on the back drop what ever she wanted, and then with the help of her mom and myself we made a little mouse puppet. She told us what everything was on the backdrop and then directed myself and her mother while she filmed her story.

I found I had some free time in the evening so if this happens again this week then I will set up an editing corner so the children can come in if they want and help edit and upload pictures of their art work on to aiteile.

Altogether a very enjoyable day. The whole staff are fantastic, and its brilliant that the teachers and play specialist are so involved and interested in the project. I am looking forward to Day 2.
