Day 14 - When to stop

The principle of the school (and class teacher for my group) has returned and we met for the first time today. We had a brief meeting in advance of working with the children.

I began the day by showing the children the work I had made with children in West Cork Arts Centre during the Easter break. They were excited to see what the various age-groups produced and were interested to know how the children in Cork felt about their work. We had a discussion about what happens to work after it has been made and shown for a period of time.

This brought us to discuss the fact that we might show our work, and upon deciding to do so, when and how we should start preparing for this.

While the children were unanimous in wanting to show what they have made to date, they were very disappointed at the fact that we would have to stop making new work. While we all agreed that selecting, hanging and sharing were all part of the process, there was a palpable need to keep creating.

Initially, we rolled out the maps we had been working on the previous week and added to them in terms of additional sheets, color, text etc. As the children finished them we looked for spaces within the school to hang them. This began a frenzy of clearing spaces, sorting work, finding space and climbing ladders. It felt like we had only begun when time was up.
