Day 2 on the 29/04/09

Today I started in the class room with a lot of children ageing 5 to 13. There was a lot of children who had to leave but most got to the making stage so had a puppet. We started talking while making the puppets and there was a lot of sports fans. A 16 year old boy came in for a look but since there where already 6 other students from different age groups he did not want to stay. I asked if he would like to be involved in the filming and editing but he didnt any suggestions welcome on how to get a 16 year old boy interested while working with the other children at the same time?

The computers where down all morning so we where not able to do the link up with the other hospitals which was a shame. It was back up running in the afternoon.

The day progressed with a group of 5, 4 of which where able to complet there puppet and also make a puppet for a girl who wasent able to join us. I taught it was lovely to see so much taught going in to a puppet for another child they had never even met. The 5th child had to leave during making, but one of the others had to leave during the play with the puppets so the 5th child came back and played with the other boys puppet and also helped with the filming.

There where 2 students who where able to remain for the whole morning workshop they where a 13 year old girl and a 5 year old girl. Both of these girls had very different strong ideas which seemed to join very well together while playing with the puppets. Over the workshop they worked together and became friends and very chatty. When the boy returned he hadnt really got to know the girls yet so he hadent become more social like them. However he really enjoyed the filming. I talked to the teachers about this after the class. While making the puppets they chat and get to know each other so that when they are working the puppets they are not self conscious around each other. But if you skip that step they havent got to know the other children and its a little harder.

They created a house with a garden , a rocket and stars and they really liked the castle made by a girl from last week so they used these for their backdrop. They started of with the dinasaur chasing a girl puppet to the castle where the second girl puppet lives who is famous and is showing a mtv crew around her house. They then start to to just play around a girl rides a dinousaur, puppets meet up and chat like old friends, and then one of the children find a polystiren ball which starts of crashing down as a meteor but becomes a football. A football match with the puppets follows. Liverpool is out on the field and the goaly and the camera man are manchester united. Liverpool feel they have won, but manchester united feel they are delusional. The conversation on football from earlier while making the puppets found its way into the show.

I then went out to the wards and worked with a girl age 11 and a boy age 7. They where both equally excited about sport the boy with rugby and the girl with hurling so they made puppets with the gerseys of their favourite players and interviewed each other. I really need to refresh my knowledge of sports they really taught me a lot. We laughed alot while making this puppet show, one of the puppets lost hes head during the play but instead of this being a bad thing it was really funny and very quickly put back together.

I then worked with two sisters age 5 and 9 they made really pretty puppets, the 5 year old was very tired so she filmed me dancing their puppets

Today was very busy with not much time to draw breath but it was time spent laughing alot. Its great to see what can be created in such a short amount of time
