Day 6 on the 27/05/09

Inspired by the fact that the children of limerick are obsessed with sport, today we had a day completly dedicated to it. I had made a sports puppet who the children gave character to. His name is Paddy, he is a limerick hurler whos greatest ambition is to get rid of his helmet hair, he is on his way to visit Siobhan in Dublin and all off us in limerick wish him well on his journey.

We sat down in frount of the paper of the cranky and decided what our puppets would be, then they each drew a habitate for there puppet. They decided it looked like the olympics and so after drawing a field, swimming pools, a running track and a dance area we made the puppets. They attatched to the wrist and the legs had knees and hips that matched up with the childrens  knuckles so that when they moved there fingers the puppets legs moved.

We linked up briefly on live link but some children where still finishing so i was working with them while the others talked on live feed, i think the other group was in the same situation. The children took part in events, there was running commentry and then they all won a medal. They where a very chat bunch who really helped each other.

I then went to the day ward and worked with one boy who made a footballer and a backdrop with spectators and other players. The boy i work with every week was beside him but was very absorbed with the playstation, once we where ready to play i asked would he get involved and he was persuaded by the playspecialist who jumped the puppet in front of the screen. at first he didnt want to and said he didnt want to play with puppets but 5 mins later he declared he could play all night so that was great. its really great having the support from people who really know what they are doing. We joined both tables together from the beds and made a really long pitch with goals on both sides, one of the boys aunts got involved and worked one of the puppets. We spent alot of time under the beds looking for the balls, it was very funny.

I then went into the playroom where 7 children, 3 from the morning session and 4 more made the same type of puppets one of the playroom workers made a goaly to and helped with the others puppets, also the three children from the morning where able to show the others how to do it.

All in all a very busy and fun day.
