Day 10 on the 24/06/2009

Today was a very eventful day. Inspired by Einstein (Siobhan’s visiting puppet) we made sock puppets. We had one girl and 5 boys, 2 parents, Karen from trinity, my self and one of the teachers. We made lots of fun alien hand puppets, one had 28 eyes, she had lots of eyes in her mouth so she can see the lovely ice-cream she would eat, suddenly ice-cream became a big theme and another boy who had finished his puppet made her an ice-cream space ship. One little boy who wouldn’t talk and who’s mom was doing a lot of the making, really came out of his shell and started helping Karen with her puppet. He was suddenly really happy to be involved it was lovely to see. Another boy who had left early last week was obviously a lot more comfortable and became the leader of the group making props (he made the space ship) and really got involved in the performance. He wrote that the bit he liked least was when it ended. We linked up late as Karen was trying to fix are link up, the sound didn’t work but she fixed yippee Aiteile will now work properly, thanks to Karen. We saw some lovely images and puppets from temple street.

After lunch I went to the day ward and worked with a 4 year old boy (the most intelligent 4 year old I had ever met). Using his jack puppet and two puppets I had made to show the kids, we re-enacted jack and the beanstalk scene by scene. We cut out 10 golden eggs, 10 golden coins that he pointed out looked more like hexagons. He played jack and the giant, I was jacks puppet mother (he was very insistent to put the puppet in the title and at one stage asked his puppet mom to tell his mom a message). He was the director through out. Mary (teacher) joined in and they continued with the story which developed into the three bears.

I went to work with his brother who was doing a recycling project for a competition so we made a puppet from a Intervenes drip (the same one he uses). They throw them away after each use and there was one that had just been finished with. It became a marionette futuristic dog, which looked like a poodle. A very helpful nurse injected the watery white paint inside the dog so it moved about. She taught it would be very funny if a doctor came in and saw what she was doing. A surgical glove became a man who walked the dog. The strings of the marionette where made from the tubes of the drip. This was the first time in my residence so far that I got to work with found objects from the hospital. It was great and got staff involved. We were about to film his puppet, but he had to leave for a scan. But I am sure he will film it himself as this boy was both an animator and a musician. A very impressively talented family.

What a great day to have my half day mark.
