"I wonder if..."

We also did an activity called "I wonder if..."

For this activity, the group stands in a circle. One person in the room then identifies a problem or issue within their professional life that they would like to put to the group (specific details/ identity of those involved don’t have to be mentioned).

When someone has stated the issue, they must then remain silent during the activity. In response, we go around the circle and everyone takes a turn to provide a potential solution or way of looking at the problem, by prefacing it with "I wonder if..." Anyone who doesn’t have a response can simply ’pass’. If there are lots of responses, the circle can go round again, or until the suggestions stop.

In this session, one artist posed the following problem: How can I get back into my studio?

Here are some of the responses:

"I wonder if time, money and love are the same energy, you need the feel good factor."

"I wonder if you fear going back to the studio"

"I wonder if you shouldn’t think of it as going back to the studio, but forward. You need a new love affair with the studio."

"I wonder if the alarm could go off earlier and you could go to the studio with a cup of coffee and relax there."

"I wonder if you know that there’s a practical solution to the time issue."

"I wonder if you could put it in the diary."

"I wonder if you need to find soemthing new that inspires you."

"I wonder if you put as much time, thought and love into your practice as you do other projects, that would help."

"I wonder if your practice is what you really need?"

"I wonder if you could find a new challenge for yourself."

"I wonder if you could work your way back to the studio."We then did a quick evaluation of this activity:

1 thing you noticed:

-nodding
-gentleness
-thought - taking time to think
-Compassion
-Connection (with the issue)
-Putting "I wonder if" at the start adds possibilities
-Non-judgemental

For the listener, how did it feel?

-Wisdom
-Truth
-Good advice
