Thomond Bridge

Description

Thomond Bridge, looking north to St Munchin`s Church, I took this shot from the cemetry of the other St. Munchin`s Church while there was a skyfull of seagulls swooping around the Northside Munchins, at the same time I heard the caw of crows behind me.....this bridge is the site of the Banshee`s mark from a local legend which is retold in one of our Shannon stories.

The original bridge, which connected King`s Island with the Co. Clare side of the river, was built sometime between 1185 and 1210. This structure collapsed in 1292 killing 80 men. The bridge was then reconstructed with fourteen unequal arches. Unfortunately, while the bridge was sturdy it was often flooded at high tide.

This bridge, reconstructed by brothers James & George Pain in 1840, now has seven arches.
