  • PRINT A POSTER PROJECT - Primary Schools

    Created 2010-11-01 by Sarah Beirne

    Location: Sub-urban - Co. Dublin

    Duration: 2010-11-01 to 2010-12-13

Project Outline

Taking place during November and December 2010, this exciting project gave two 4th class primary classes the opportunity to explore, respond and interact with Draochts visual arts programme with artists Ian Slattery and Genevieve Harden.

During the first week of November, participating students  visited Draocht for a facilitated visit to `Playboys, Paycocks and Playbills`, an exhibition of poster designs from The Abbey Theatre from the 1970s & 1980s. This exhibition features the acclaimed art work of two graphic designers Kevin Scally and Brendan Foreman. The large and colorful posters exhibited changes over time in graphic design and showcase many different styles of printing.

Following this visit, Draochts artists went to the students classroom once a week to facilitate a series of hands on workshops. During these workshops students were encouraged to respond to the exhibition they have seen with design ideas, experimentation and poster invention using the theme This is Me . Through these 1-1 hr workshops students learned about the history of print and some elements of poster design. They got the opportunity to work with a number of different tools, such as a miniature printing press and print rollers, and experiment with etching, as well as different materials, from bubble wrap to printing paint.

The project culminated in the creation of a professionally computer generated printed poster of the classes` school crest made up of a mosaic of all the prints students made during the project.
