Visual Art Programme for Schools Sept 2008

Project Outline

The Linenhall Arts Centre�s Visual Art Programme for Schools is designed specifically for primary schools, and is offered to 28 schools in the Linenhall�s locality. These tour and workshop events are specifically designed to focus on selected aspects of the exhibiting artist�s work. They include a gallery talk introducing the work of the exhibiting artist during which children are encouraged to engage in discussion about the work. Following the gallery talk the children are brought to the Linenhall�s community arts room where they create their own pieces exploring in a practical way the particular aspects of the artist�s work which are being examined. Support materials are provided for teachers should they wish to follow up on the workshop in the classroom setting.

In September 2008 the programme focused on the exhibition Irish Female Artists from the Twentieth Century from the Model Niland Collection. Aims and objectives as follows:

Aims

1 To introduce children to the work of Irish Female artists of the Twentieth Century, a Collection of artwork from the Model Niland, Sligo, via a gallery tour and talk, with special emphasis on the Cubist artists.

2 To engage children in critical reflection on visual art and in particular the work of Irish Female artists of the Twentieth Century with special focus on the different styles/movements that are evident in the exhibition.

3 To engage children in a challenging drawing and colouring exercise, with special concentration on Cubism

Objectives

1 To provide children with information about the selected Irish Female Artists of the Twentieth Century.

2 To engage children in discussion about;
- the different practices, traditions, of the women artists
- the materials and methods used by the artists
- the content of the pieces, subject matter,
- the different styles/movements of art that featured in Ireland from the late eighteenth century to the present day
- how the selected artists, Swanzy, Hone, Jelliett, and McGuinness, were some of the first Irish artists to be part of the Cubist art movement.

3 To encourage children to;
- draw objects from a selected still life arrangement
- draw the objects to size, using a viewfinder to select a view, if desired
- draw the objects from different perspectives/angles, through moving around the still life arrangement and selecting another seat at a different angle
- overlay their drawings
- concentrate on size, shape and colour in their drawings with less to no emphasis on detail. To aid the children in this task special glasses have been prepared which when worn blur out the detail/s in the still life arrangement.
- look at the shapes within their overlayed drawings and apply colour by shape rather than by object
