This is my fourth year working as an artist in residence in one of the primary schools in Co. Kilkenny - throuh a programme organized and coordinated by the Butler Gallery, Kilkenny Castle.

It is always a very enjoyable and inspirational time for me as an artist.

Working witha relatively large group - 28 students - we have allowed sufficient time for exploration and experimental processes throughout the project.
Participating children were introduced to hand papermaking techniques - using mixed pulps of recycled paper waste (collected by themselves) and natural plant fibres of cotton, abaca and esparto grass.
We focused on exploring different textures, "collecting" them in and around the school, creating them in wet handmade paper surfaces and imaging them - so I suppose we could also call it a `texture project`... We drew `texture maps` of the school environment and had great fun outside when "collecting surface rubbings..."
We have also decorated and painted these textured and fascinating handmade papers, using ribbons, threads, wool, silk fibres, coloured papers etc. and fibre reactive textile dyes (getting our hands blue and green)...
At the last phase of the project children were working in 4 groups - designing and creating large collaborative handmade paper pieces - these will be on a permanent display in the new exstension of the school building from September 2009.
