`Learning by looking through a child`s eyes`: Ríonach Ní Néill - excerpts

RONACH N NILL gives a fascinating overview of some of her dance and choreography work, and the different ways in which children were involved in these pieces. To listen to this talk in full, click here.

In this talk, Ronach talks about two very different pieces of work: See Saw and Between Earth Sky and Home.

In discussing the first piece, Ronach explains how this was a controlled, choreographed piece of work, initially intended for an adult audience. However, when placed within a different context, and performed to a multi-generational audience (including very young children), it becomes quite a different piece of work. As part of her description of this process, Ronach talks about the layers that children can add to a performance; what we - as adults - can learn from watching children watching dance; and also, the issues that arise when performing work for, or with, children:

Why is there less status given to work created with or for children (even as part of a multi-generational audience)?

Does this kind of work ever get reviewed?

These are just some of the questions that Ronach poses.

We had great difficulty in highlighting sections of this talk as there were just so many interesting thoughts and ideas addressed by Ronach.

Here are just a few that we have selected for you, if you don`t have time to watch the whole presentation:

Children don`t know the rules yet - children move in and out of the performance space during See Saw

What`s so special about how a young person engages with art?
