Harold Boy’s National School (Dalkey) Residency Self Portraits

Description

In one two hour session the boys (mostly 9 year olds) did a series of exercises examining their own faces - feeling their ’topography’ after looking at and discussing maps; looking at their faces in mirrors and drawing their faces but without looking at the drawing; looking at both mirror image and drawing, etc. I gave them thick black markers to encourage confident unerasable lines and because children tend to love using them. In later sessions I think this work would have informed their puppet making, but it was also embarked on as part of our ’getting to know each other’ phase. An effort of mine to get to know names etc. I have erased the names in this image however to protect privacy.
