Week 4 & 5, ’The Quangle Wangle Quee’

I used one of my favorite kids stories ’ The Quangle Wangle Quee’ by Edward Lear, for these sessions. I made myself a big hat, (like the Quangle Wangle’s’) and used props ( characters from the story made from card) and drawing for the story telling. I love this book because it is wonderfully exotically mad with crazy creatures, and because it is a wonderful piece of poetry. The words are a joy to learn and perform and are quite captivating to an audience.

We made crumpety trees both weeks..once on a large sheet of paper on the floor and the next week on the wall. As well as ponds and lilly pads for the frog from the story. I used a glove puppet for the song about frogs and we made frog masks one week and canaries another. They used stencils with soft pastels again and cut out paper dipped in water for leaves on the trees and we sat in a circle tearing green and yellow paper for grass, again dipped in water and added to the big picture.

It was nice to see many of the kids getting more confident and familiar with the materials and processes. They work with more comfort and ease and the sessions flow more from the kids themselves as they navigate themselves through the activities. Paint always seems to be the most interesting and exciting part of any of the sessions and the kids often turn up talking about paint and when will we paint, where’s the paint? etc.
