scroll mapping

P5&6. In our last session we decided to take a step back, reflecting on what we have done to date - which has been more empirical research into materials and processes and ideas , generally around mapping. Reflecting, our attention came back to work we had started earlier in the project: The Scroll map. Continuously looking at what we have been doing,  we wanted to focus in & develop it further, as it is something that excites us all.
One of the main things that came out of the scroll mapping exercise, was that there was an oral narrative to each map, it helped in the drawing of them and the remembering of the journey. This is something I do in my own art practice, backtracking with the added advantage of perspective. It is really great to see this way of working materialising itself in the classroom, with all getting involved - more stories being remembered. And a general sense of trying things out! And wanting to get stuck in
We looked at our scroll maps and zoomed in on a particular area of the drawing that was interesting to us. The hedgeschool which is at the back of one students house, an old shop (which only sold four things) that is now a cattle shed, Longford castle, a local B&B with connections to horse racing and many more: Historical and contemporary connections to places. Now introducing language like zoom and moving image I am trying to get some thinking on the idea of film and narrative.
We all agreed that we needed to get more information on what we were investigating, so Eamonn suggested looking into local history with the class leading up to our next session. I am looking forward to what we will have to work with. I must admit I am quite excited, on the edge of a discovery. We will start out sculpturally, building our own scroll devices in an assembly line as a group. Then we will scroll these images in front of a video camera recording a narrative both through the scrolling map & through the audio voiceover from the student telling his/her story.
While focusing in on this we are also working collectively on a collaged map. It seems to work well as we are keeping an element of play/ experiment alongside something more focused.
Am now investigating the best way to record sound, although I have a good mic and mixing desk, it will pick up too much of the backgroundnoise of the school/classroom I will try a tie clip mic which might work better. ..
We will need to work collaboratively in small groups. Per group we will need: a camera person, a scrolling person, and the  author of the text and creator of map. Then in each group we will be rotating these roles.
we will start and see where it takes us.
