Sound Paintings, Taking time

Description

On the first day of painting it seemed important to keep stressing that we had plenty of time to work on the paintings. I felt they were behaving as if in a race to finish. It was a new concept to the children that after covering the page completely that there was still plenty more work to be done, and that we could look at work on the paintings in terms of creating layers. At the beginning of the second day we took time to stand back from the work and positively criticise their own and each others work. This helped find direction for the work ahead. Sinead explained to me that to come back to a painting was a completely new concept for the children. They are used to having to finish a painting in one session. The children approached the work in a more thoughtful way on this second session and were able to slow down their process, to regularly stand back and analyse what they were working on. It felt like we had broken into a whole new way of working.
