Lat session Graiguenamangh

My final session with the children was on Friday.  In the morning I opened the kiln before heading up to the school I was delighted with how the panels turned out until I got to the last 2 panels at the bottom of the kiln.....an element had gone and they weren`t fired hot enough!  But they just have to be refired as there was no damage done, but I was disappointed that the children wouldn`t see all 5 together when they saw them for the first time, but thats the risk of ceramics.  But what they did see seemed to surprise them, that they had made these permanent things to be displayed to everyone.

Apart from viewing the final work we had a lot of bits to finish off but we managed it.  We painted backgrounds  for the clay portraits and glued them on, this solved the problem of any bits and pieces that had broken when drying.  The sketch books where stapled together and the final 10 had a go on the wheel and I`m picking up the pots tomorrow to fire them here in the studio.

We had a couple of visitors during the session, the 1st being the principle with a younger class who came to see the work then followed by Jean Tormey, project co-ordinator.

The final thing I had the children do was an evaluation form with words and images of their most favourite and least favourite part of the who project.  Some of the evaluations were amazingly detailed in words and others had beautiful drawings as illustrations of what they enjoyed.

I`m happy that the school bought some airdry clay and some modelling tools so that they could carry on some clay work after I`d left.

Over all I really enjoyed working on this project and the group I had were great to work with which made a huge difference to the energy of the sessions.
