The Nature of Sligo

Week 5. 11 December 2008

Fossils: Which are the petrified remains of plants and animals can be found in a number of locations in Sligo including Streedagh, Ballyconnell, Raughly and Serpent Rock near Cloonagh. These places are under Special Area of Conservation. Presenting a slide show of fossils which I had photographed at Ballyconnell completed our previous engagement with this work which began with a discussion on: what is graphite?
Tomas and I intend to organise a field-trip in 2009 to Streedagh with the children to photograph, explore and draw these amazing creatures.
Tomas opened OSI and we tracked these places on-line. He also located Sooey National School, travelling with the children down virtual roads, a birds eye view of the landscape and locating the childrens home.

Klee: This week I decided as an exercise in physical and spatial matter the children would make a 3-Dimensional model of their drawing from last week,  constructed in marla. The transference of a model from 2-d to 3-d proved a challenge as they did not have that much experience with sculptural activities.

Shape & Form: I realised that there was a difficulty grasping the fundementals of shape & form, so again I put a slide show of these essential elements discussing the characteristics of each.

Light & Dark: In the afternoon, I set up a still-life from which the children concentrated on shade, tone and contrast, producing very good drawing work that emphasied the form of the fruit, moving from coutour work that emphasied shape to solid material that emphasied form.
