The Nature of Sligo
Week 9. Thursday 5th February
We began the morning looking at a slide projection of native wild birds that Tomas had put together and listened to the sounds each bird sings. The morning was so bright and clear we decided to take a walk.
The children were asked to try and observe details in the landscape, listening out for bird-sounds and whether we could identify any.
Near the school we pass by an open field which was full of birds but because they were at such a distance it was difficult to make out what they were. They did however find two birds at the top of a tree which were blue tits. Some children took photographs of small details in their environment such as ice patterns on the track and new plants creeping out of the ground-snowdrops in the front garden of the priests house-as spring approaches new life follows.
Back at the classroom they drew a map of their route, marking in specific landmarks that linked the route and what they noticed en-route. I also asked them to draw something they had seen on the walk from their heads.
Later we continued with a number of drawing exercises which included drawing the object without looking at the paper which was covered with tissue paper. For some their hand, eye coordination is weak so a few drawing exercises were devised including: dot, vertical, horizontal, line drawings and practice in drawing the perfect circle, square and triangle.
We then went back to drawing a number of the objects they found on their walk, focusing on the contour and form using a graphite block.
We concluded the day looking at Google earth, finding the school and the route of our walk that we had taken.
