The Nature of Sligo

Week 12: We began our day with a trip to the Sligo Art Gallery to view the Kidsown exhibition which included the childrens sketchbooks.

We then travelled to Ballyconnell Beach in Sligo to explore the fossils (350-300 million years) on-foot. This field-trip related to our previous investigations into a geographical and historical study of fossils in the classroom.

I had brought clay and working in pairs the children took impressions of a number of these extradonairy forms, which will be cast in plaster at a later date.

They took many photographs and rubbings of the fossils on the beach.

On our way back to the school we stopped at Drumcliff to visit Yeats grave, exploring the church and grave-yard, searching for the oldest tomb.

Week13: There was a five week break as I had traveled to Argentina for a residency and exhibition programme and then the Easter holidays impacted on our work.

As a result we were all out of practice, so I began the day with a number of drawing exercises to inspire the children back to drawing which was difficult after such a long break.

We spent time outdoors writing and looking at all the new flowers and plants that has sinced come to fruition in our absence.

Next week with our nature study books we will try and identify each of the new plants that are growing.

For the next three weeks we are going to develop an animation that will include drawing, sound and text a culmination of all the exercises that we have been developing since the begining of the project.
