Project Outline

Tales of Light and Shadow, was West Cork Arts Centre’s Annual Children’s Exhibition for 2013, which ran from 16th March - 7th April.

The nine participating groups were all part of our Primary Schools Classroom-based Programme 2012 - 13 and worked with me over the course of six months, beginning with a visit to the exhibition The Essence of Taste by James L Hayes at WCAC in October 2012. The two dedicated special needs groups worked with artist Tess Leak.

The children and their teachers responded to a number of elements within James’s artwork including the use of materials and technology, the play of light and dark and an interest in stories, histories and the environment. Each group took their project in their own unique direction exploring themes and materials that were relevant or interesting to them.

The resulting exhibition showed such a varied and interesting response that I feel its well worth sharing here along with the artists statements that each group wrote explaining the origins of the work, which I will upload in a number of posts.
